+ MEMBERSHIP

How do I participate in the CUPPY program?

Once you purchase a membership, you will receive a membership token. That's all you need to participate! You will need to scan the token to check out and return cuppys.

How much does a CUPPY membership cost?

A CUPPY membership costs $14.95 annually for unlimited use of cuppys at any participating location. This fee is used to finance the initiative and act as a non-refundable deposit for CUPPY in case cups are not returned. This way we can ensure that there will always be cups in circulation for members to use.

How many cups can I check out?

You can check out up to 2 cuppys at a time. As long as you return your cup(s), you will have unlimited access to clean cuppys.

How long do I have to return the cups?

There is no time limit for how long you can have a cup in your possession - simply return it at your earliest convenience. However, you are unable to check out more than 2 cups at a time.

What happens if I lost my token?

Each token is unique and non-replaceable. Unfortunately, if you have lost your token, you will need to purchase a new one before you can continue to use CUPPY.

What happens if I damage a cup?

Worry not! Simply return it to any participating location and we will collect it for recycling. There is no cost to you and you can check out another cuppy to keep using!

+ CUPS

What are cuppys made of?

Cuppys are made from 100% recyclable polypropylene (PP), which is completely food-safe, BPA-free, and pollutant-free.

Why did CUPPY opt for recyclable polypropylene over other materials?

Polypropylene can be noted for its many green qualities, such as:

Durability - Cuppys have an extended lifespan and can be reused more than 300 times each.
Low Energy Manufacturing - PP's manufacturing and recycling process uses considerably less energy than alternate materials.
Ease of cleaning - PP can be cleaned in a dishwasher or easily hand washed with soap and water.
Practicality - Cuppys are light and durable, making them easy to carry around with you.

A recent study done by CRAIG (International Reference Center for the life cycle of products, process, and services) compared the potential environmental impact of a 16 oz, single-use coffee cup made of a mix of cardboard and polyethylene (with a lid made of polystyrene) to a 16 oz cup made of other materials (ceramic, stainless steel, polypropylene, and polycarbonate). Over a one-year span (using one cup a day), the reusable cups scored better than the single-use cup in these categories: greenhouse gas emissions, human-health effects, and resources required. However, it would take 20-100 uses for a reusable cup to makeup for the greenhouse gas emissions of a single-use cup. PP is the on lowest end of reuses (20) required to make up for a one single-use cup.

Why not use biodegradable plastic or plant based plastic?

We are always on the lookout for sustainable materials to use. At this time, bioplastic and plant based plastic is not truly sustainable and not suitable for our reusable needs. Here are some articles that highlight these issues:

National Geographic - Are Bioplastics Better For The Environment?
CBC - Don't Put Compostable Plastics in the Green Bin

Is it safe for hot beverages?

PP remains stable between temperatures of -15°C to +120°C, so CUPPY is well suited for both hot and cold beverages. Enjoy anything from fresh brewed coffee to ice cold bubble tea!

How do you clean CUPPYs?

Cuppys are cleaned after every use, on site of the participating location they are returned to. Cuppys are thoroughly sanitized and will only be re-entered into the cup-sharing program once they have met Canadian Food Inspection Agency standards of cleanliness. If you are hanging onto a cuppy and want to clean it, you can put it in a dishwasher or hand-washed with warm water and dish soap.

+ LIDS

what materials are the lids made of?

The lids are made from the same material as the cup itself, for the same reasons listed above.

Do I need to purchase a lid in order to use CUPPY?

No, the lid is not a mandatory purchase. While it may prevent spillage and enhance your take out experience, it is not required.

How do I clean the lid?

The lid is comprised of 3 parts - cover, base, and straw. The cover can be easily removed; both the cover and base can be cleaned with soap and warm water. The straw is soft silicone and can be cleaned by running water through and gently squeezing.

Do I get to keep the lid?

We have done research and it shows that people prefer to have their own lid (for hygiene purposes!). The lid is yours, once purchased, to keep to reuse with CUPPY or any standard single-use cup (can reduce the amount of lids we throw away!).
